What is eco-anxiety?
The condition, which the American Psychological Association (APA) describes as "a chronic fear of environmental destruction," has spread. A recent survey, also conducted by the APA, found that 68% of American adults say they have at least some eco-anxiety - and about half of those between the ages of 18 and 34 said their stress on climate change affects daily life.
APA adds that eco-anxiety - also known as climate anxiety or climate change anxiety - can cause acute effects (usually after a natural disaster) and chronic effects (resulting from gradual climate change) on mental health. They can be displayed as:
- Shock and trauma
- Post-traumatic
stress disorder - Complicated stress
- Anxiety
- Substance abuse
- Aggression and violence
- Loss of control
- Feeling of hopelessness, fear, fatality, etc.
Who is most affected by climate anxiety?
Not surprisingly, those experiencing the direct consequences of climate change - fires, storms, floods - are particularly vulnerable.
There is no way to alleviate climate and environmental anxiety, but continuous personal contribution or through climate and environmental protection associations helps a lot.
