Listen, it will not drive you away from mistreating sushi, but knowing how to behave and respond simply improves your restaurant experience. Even a meal can turn into a lecture on Japanese culture. You have to keep in mind that sushi is not a cheap hobby, so why not do it properly.
preparation
Green towels - if you are served one - should be used to clean your hands before eating, mainly because traditionally sushi maki and nigiri are eaten by hand. Use the towel to clean your hands and set aside.
Follow the basic ethos to use sticks when consuming sashimi - crispy fish pieces without rice.
Pour very little soy sauce into bowl; you can add later if you need to. Doing harm to soy sauce is considered taboo in Japanese ethics. Also, if you throw in too much, hint that the fish is not fresh and you need to hide the taste.
Do not add wasabi to the soy sauce bowl. Although this is usually done, it does not allow you to fully enjoy the sushi.
When not eating, place the sticks on the stand beside the plate, clean and parallel to each other. If you leave them somewhere, signal that you are finished eating.
Use of Wasabi and Ginger
Believe it or not, however much you like burning, mixing ginger hassle is not the right way to eat sushi. The chief has added small amounts of wasabi to each piece of sushi, based on the type of fish intended to highlight the flavors.
If you want to add wasabi, put a little fish on the sticks or a piece of ginger. Don?t leave ginger on top of sushi. Also, licking the stick with wasabi is considered unpopular.
Fresh ginger is on the table to cleanse the palate between different sushi and should never be eaten with sushi.
How to Eat Sushi |
Fortunately, there is no order as to which sushi to eat first.
Sashimi is eaten with chopsticks, but has traditionally been consumed with fingers. When consuming sashimi you are allowed to mix wasabi in soy sauce.
Turn sushi upside down and only fish sauce - never rice. The rice will absorb a lot of the sauce and change the texture of the sushi. If you have rice in the sauce, you will be considered an amateur.
Sushi like unagi and those prepared with sauce should not be dipped.
Sushi should be placed upside down in order for the fish to touch the tongue. Feel the taste before chewing. It would be ideal for a sushi to be consumed with a single bite.
And finally, have fun.
