After decades of birth control, China is facing an alarming population decline, with a fertility rate of just 1.15 children per woman by 2024. To curb an aging population and labor shortage, the government has begun offering subsidies of up to 3,600 yuan for each child up to the age of three. The payments will be tax-free and will not affect social benefits, in the hope that they will encourage more families to have children.
