The horror film "Sinners," directed by Ryan Coogler, has officially made history, with a whopping 16 nominations at the 2026 Oscars , leaving behind "All About Eve" (1950), "Titanic" (1997) and "La La Land" (2016), which each had 14 nominations. This success marks a record for the genre and a rare moment for horror cinema.
Released in April 2025, "Sinners" has been nominated in some of the most important categories, including "Best Picture", "Best Director", as well as for the performances of three of the main actors: Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo.
At the center of the film is Michael B. Jordan, who plays twins Smoke and Stack, two very different roles from each other, which have brought the actor numerous accolades. The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, etc.
“Sinners” centers on the story of twins Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown and open a nightclub. Their plans take a dark turn when they encounter vampires, but the film goes beyond classic horror.
The film uses elements of horror as a metaphor to touch on themes of race, religion, family, and violence; it is a dark, but also deeply symbolic story.
In previous interviews, director Ryan Coogler has admitted that making the film was emotionally challenging, as for the first time he had created a completely original story, not based on real events.
The Oscar ceremony will take place on March 15 (in the early hours of March 16, according to our local time).
