An Australian woman and her family accidentally received $10.4 million instead of a $100 refund.
Thevamanogari Manivel and her sister are now facing legal action and have been ordered to pay back a substantial sum of money - with interest.
She was originally scheduled to receive the $100 refund from cryptocurrency exchange platform Crypto.com in May last year. However, a mistake occurred and the platform awarded him over $10 million.
Now, there are two types of people in this world - those who would inform the company about the mistake and those who would keep quiet and spend the money in the blink of an eye.
Manivel went with the latter option, but didn't keep the money all to himself. Instead, she distributed them to a number of friends and family members, including her daughter and sister, Thilagavathy Gangadory.
She even splurged on a $1.35 million mansion for Gangadory, with four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a gym and home theater.
They lived the life of luxury for 7 months, until a routine audit in December, when Crypto.com realized what had happened.
In February this year, the company began legal proceedings, which included freezing Manivel's accounts - but now it was too late.
She had already transferred most of the money to another joint account and another substantial amount was handed over to her daughter.
While the case has been ongoing, according to Daily Mail Australia, the High Court ruled in favor of Crypto.com last Friday (August 26) after Gangadory and her legal team failed to appear.
As for the rest of the missing money, separate cases have been filed against the other defendants involved.
