
Research shows that a number of drinks can help you sleep better, such as tart cherry juice and chamomile tea. But there is a drink recommended by experts for sleep that you probably haven't thought of until now.
When consumed during the day, but also before bed, green tea can help promote restful sleep.
Michael Breus, sleep specialist and clinical psychologist, explains why green tea is so highly recommended for better sleep.
"Drinking green tea during the day - can be beneficial for reducing fatigue and increasing sleep quality. This is due to a compound in green tea called L-theanine, which helps the brain to relax by reducing stress-related hormones."
A small caveat is that you should be aware of the type of green tea you get at the store. Make sure you're drinking a low-caffeine green tea if possible – some green tea blends, especially matcha, are high in caffeine. It can keep you awake if you drink it too late.
Research suggests that low-caffeine green tea is particularly beneficial when it comes to reducing stress and improving sleep quality.
