Italy's right-wing party, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has proposed a new law that would punish the use of English and other foreign words in official communications with fines of 5,000 to 100,000 euros.

The purpose of the legislation, which has been widely condemned even by the most renowned scholars of Italian linguistics and philology, the Accademia della Crusca, is to "protect and promote the Italian language" and protect national identity.

The Italian language - like most other languages ??in Europe - has acquired English terms in recent years, partly because they were terms that denoted "new" things that did not belong to the Italian tradition and not only (computer, social media).

The acquisition of English words in other languages ??is a debate in which opinions are divided. Some argue in defense of the integrity of the national language, while others accept and appreciate the fact that living languages ??are constantly evolving and enriched with new elements. For the latter, language develops with man and it is impossible to limit the influences from other languages, part of people's daily life.
