The debut of the musical 'Devil Wears Prada' was music to Elton John's ears. But he could only listen to the production. During Sunday's premiere, the musician revealed that the progression of a recent eye infection has resulted in him losing his sight.
"As you may know, I have had problems and now I have lost my sight. I haven't been able to see the show, but I enjoyed it," John told the audience at London's Dominion Theatre.
John climbed up and left the stage with the help of his husband, David Furnish, who has been providing support since the musician's vision was first affected over the summer.
In September, John revealed that his vision was limited in his right eye due to a "severe" infection. At the time, he noted that the process of recovering his sight would be slow, but expressed hope that his recovery journey would be successful.
John's impaired vision is not the first of his health concerns. At the New York premiere of his documentary 'Elton John: Never Too Late', he half-jokingly said that "there's not much left of me", noting:
"I don't have tonsils or adenoids or appendix. I don't have a prostate. I don't have a right thigh, or a left knee, or a right knee. In fact, the only thing I have left is my left hip."
But he also revealed that through it all, he's been able to turn to music for support.
"Even when I was in my darkest times, I was still playing music, still recording music, so I have to thank music for being the biggest inspiration to me throughout my life," he said.
Now, John will have to learn to navigate his creative process in a new way.
