There are obvious benefits to both hot and cold showers. So what should you do?

Adam Friedman, dermatologist, says that "in an ideal world" you should take a lukewarm bath, which is more tolerable, and then apply a moisturizer to the skin, directly after washing.

However, if you want to try the extremes, there is another approach. Doctors call it "contrast shower" and it is a technique developed by dr. Sebastian Kneipp.

Basically, what you need to do is: Stay in the coldest water possible for 1 minute. Once the minute has passed, stand for another 1 minute in the hottest water you can stand (without overdoing it). Do this for 5 times. 

According to the doctor, cold water "narrows blood vessels" and hot water opens them.

"This process is good for regeneration and detoxification," says Sebastian Kneipp.
