When you go to the dentist, you're probably only concerned about a cavity or a tooth that doesn't look pink enough. But to dentists, your mouth is an open book. From the color of your gums to a slightly strange breath odor, they can detect things you wouldn't even think to associate with your teeth.

According to Dr. Kami Hoss, author of the book "If Your Mouth Could Talk," over 100 diseases of the body manifest in the mouth. From diabetes to anemia to accumulated stress, your mouth reveals itself.

Here are some of the most interesting discoveries that dentists share with their patients (or that they understand themselves, without being told anything):

- If you've only started flossing the night before your appointment, it's noticeable right away. Swollen, bleeding, and red gums will give you away!

- If you have a diet high in sugar, acid, or coffee and tea, you can't miss a day without it, goodbye, stains and enamel erosion.

- If you have diabetes, your gums swell and bleed more quickly. Your breath may even smell like "rotten fruit."

- If you have had eating disorders like bulimia, the inner enamel of your teeth will speak for itself.

- If he bites his nails, his front teeth show it.

- If you have a vitamin deficiency, your mouth becomes very dry, sores appear, and your gums turn white.

- If you sleep poorly or are very stressed, dentists see bruxism (teeth grinding), irritated gums, and sometimes signs of sleep apnea.

- If you are pregnant, not only gingivitis, but also "pregnancy tumors" (completely harmless) can appear on the gums.

- Whether you are left-handed or not, dentists can tell by the way you brush your teeth (they don't forgive neglected sides).

- If you consume too much tobacco or alcohol, your teeth will darken, your gums will become irritated, and the smell will be characteristic.

- If you have autoimmune, kidney or bone diseases, the signs are there, in your gums, bad breath or changes in your enamel.

In short: don't underestimate the power of a dental checkup. It can reveal more about your body than many lab tests.
