Britney Spears's fight to end her court-ordered custody took an unexpected turn this week when her father and also custodian of her estate, Jamie Spears, filed a petition to end the deal.
In a court file obtained by CNN on Tuesday, Jamie Spears cited his daughter's petitions in two separate court hearings over the summer, in his request to end his 13-year custody.
"Recent events in relation to this custody have called into question whether circumstances have changed to such an extent that the grounds for establishing a custodianship may no longer exist," the file states. "Ms Spears told this court that she wants to take control of life without the safety tracks of a guardian. She wants to be able to make her own decisions, get married and have children. In short, she wants to live life without the limitations of a guardianship ".
The dossier states that "Mr Spears wishes the best for his daughter and if she believes she can afford her life, then he too is willing to retire."
Matheë Rosengart, the singer's lawyer, called the latest development an "excuse".
"Mr Spears seems to believe he can avoid accountability and justice if he does so," he said.
Another court hearing is scheduled for September 29.
