People concerned about the climate crisis are deciding not to have children for fear that their offspring will have to contend with a climate apocalypse, according to the first academic study on the issue.
The researchers surveyed 600 people aged 27 to 45 who are considering climate concerns regarding reproduction, and found (via the Guardian) that 96% were very or extremely concerned about the well-being of their potential future children in a world with a changing climate.
A 27-year-old woman said: "I think I can not consciously bring a child into this world and force him to try and survive against those that may be apocalyptic conditions." The research also found that some people who already were parents expressed regret for their children.
This study, published in Climatic Change, is the first academic study reviewed by colleagues on the issue and analyzed a large group of concerned people. The poll was conducted anonymously, so that people can express themselves freely. However, more extensive studies are needed in this area and with a larger group of participants.
