The trend of not being in a relationship as a choice seems to be growing in recent years. The reasons why so many people choose to live their lives without being in a relationship, such as marriage, are numerous. However, a new study focused on the characteristics of people who make this choice.
In the study published in Psychological Science, researchers aimed to discover what people who are not in long-term relationships or marriage have in common.
According to the findings, people with these three characteristics are more likely to not get married:
Lack of extroversion
Extroversion refers to the tendency to focus on the pleasure we get from the external factors with which we interact.
The desire to avoid social settings or interactions with others can be perceived as indifference to your partner or apathy towards typical activities in a relationship. A lack of extroversion means that you are not relaxed and comfortable, which indicates that you may be struggling with interactions. At the same time, if you are more introverted, you are likely to have fewer opportunities to meet people, meet friends from your social circle, and therefore find it difficult to form a relationship.
Dogmatic tendency
If you're a naturally reserved person, then you know how hard it is to meet new people and accept them into your life. Healthline noted in an article that such tendencies can lead to someone becoming emotionally unavailable, which is detrimental to relationships. Not everyone likes to talk about their feelings all the time, but in a relationship it's important to connect on an emotional level as well.
Lack of conscience
Mindfulness is about being aware of our actions and the impact they can have on others. This, for quite obvious reasons, can work positively in a relationship. If you are mindful, you are more likely to be in tune with your partner's needs and feelings and have a general awareness of how you affect these things.
While it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly why someone would stay single, as everyone has their own personal reasons, there does seem to be a connection between these three personality traits and staying single forever. However, it's important to remember that no one situation is right for everyone. Some people with these characteristics may be in perfectly healthy relationships, and some who are single may not fit these characteristics at all.
