Dried fruits, especially nuts, are a quick and easy way to add healthy fats to your diet. But should you keep those nuts in the fridge, or can they last just as long in your kitchen drawer or cupboard?

Nutritionists have a clear answer on the best ways to store dried fruits so they stay fresh and ready to add to your dishes.

Short answer: Yes, dried fruit should be refrigerated. And there's a good reason why. All those healthy, unsaturated fats that are so good for our body and health can go bad if stored at room temperature, plus they get an unpleasant aroma.

"The monounsaturated fats in dried fruit are more fragile, and that's why they can break down if they're not stored at the ideal temperature," says nutritionist Amy Reed. Especially in warmer places (or during summer) or if they are also exposed to light they can spoil within a month.

Refrigeration can help slow down the process and protect these fruits for longer, and if you really want to keep them longer, you can put them in the freezer section of the refrigerator.

"The best bet is to store most of them in the refrigerator to preserve not only the flavor and aroma profile, but also the health benefits of the heart-healthy fat content," adds nutritionist Lena Bakovic.

How long can you keep them in the fridge?

It all depends on the storage method you choose and the environment in your kitchen such as humidity, light and heat that can shorten the safe storage time for dried fruit.

Dried fruits stored at room temperature can last from one to three months, depending on their type, while ripe ones if stored in an airtight container away from light and heat can last up to six months.
