6 ways a man's body changes when he becomes a father!

Pregnancy and childbirth bring many physical and psychological changes to the mother's body, but it turns out that even men can experience a wide range of physical and mental changes when they become parents.

- Testosterone levels may drop

A high testosterone level is responsible for behavioral traits like aggression, competition or attraction to the partner. But when a man becomes a father, his testosterone level seems to decrease, suggesting that now all of the man's attention should be directed within the family, not outside. Studies suggest that men who already have a partner and children have lower testosterone levels compared to men without children and those who are still looking for a partner.

- The level of oxytocin and dopamine increases

Oxytocin and dopamine are 2 chemicals that are responsible for the bond between a parent and a child. As testosterone levels fall, the positive effects of oxytocin and dopamine increase, making a new dad enjoy more games and hugs with his baby.

Hormonal ups and downs can lead to postpartum depression, even in men

While many of us know what postpartum depression is in women, few have heard anything about postpartum depression in men. Young fathers may also be prone to depression, including lowering testosterone levels. Hormonal changes along with the burden of responsibilities of a new father make men prone to experience mental health issues.

- Some changes may occur in the brain

The scientists studied brain activity in a group of young fathers and found that during the first 4 months after birth their brains showed some noticeable changes. These changes help young fathers develop parenting skills and build a strong bond with their babies. Early interactions between father and baby, build a strong foundation for the parent-child relationship play a major role in the cognitive and social development of children.

In particular, a young father’s brain may show more activity in areas responsible for planning, problem solving, and risk detection.

- Men can even develop pregnancy symptoms when their partner is expecting a baby

During a woman's pregnancy, men can also have pregnancy-related symptoms such as nausea, changes in appetite, bloating and back pain. This phenomenon is called 'charming pregnancy', or 'couvade'. It is not officially recognized as a problem or medical condition, but symptoms are common.

- Men can experience high levels of emotional stress

Parental responsibilities can result in high levels of stress and anxiety in young fathers, but the most dangerous part of this is that men often think they should not seek help because they need to be "strong" in the eyes of others. . This causes them to experience great physical and emotional stress.

It is important for both parents to spend time together, talking about their experiences during pregnancy but also after the birth of the baby. A burden shared with someone is a halved burden and sometimes, an honest conversation with the partner can do wonders.
