A cup of coffee in the morning is a must for many of us who want to start the day with energy. Moderate amounts of caffeine, such as about three cups of coffee or tea a day, mean a lower risk of heart problems, according to Dr. Chaofu Ke, a professor at Soochow University in Suzhou, China.
Cardiometabolic multimorbidity is the coexistence of at least two cardiometabolic diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
"Coffee and caffeine consumption may play an important protective role in almost all stages of the development of this disease," says Ke.
Researchers analyzed data from about 180,000 people in the United Kingdom. The results showed that moderate caffeine consumers had a lower risk of heart disease. The risk was reduced by 48.1% if they drank three cups a day, or 40.7% if they drank 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine a day, compared with people who did not drink or drank less than one cup of coffee.
"These observations add to the growing body of evidence that caffeine and naturally consumed caffeine-containing substances such as tea and coffee can improve cardiovascular health," the doctor concluded.
