A baby born weighing less than half a kilogram has celebrated its first birthday, entering the Guinness Book of Records as the most premature (premature) baby to survive.
When Richard Scott William Hutchinson came to life in the fifth month of pregnancy, doctors prepared the parents for the worst. Richard was born in Minneapolis after his mother, Beth Hutchinson, suffered medical complications.
Born 131 days before the expected date and weighing 340 grams, Richard was so small that his parents could hold him with the palm of one hand, writes Guinness.
In December 2020, after spending more than six months in the hospital, Richard was able to go home with the family.
"I could not believe he was the same boy who was sick, as I was afraid he would not survive. The same guy who was the size of my palm, with skin so translucent that I could see every rib and body vessel. ” - said Dr. Stacy Kern, one of the doctors at the hospital.
On June 5, Richard celebrated his first birthday.
"We can not believe it. We are still surprised. But we are happy. This is a way for us to share his story to raise awareness about premature births." - said the mother.
