Israel is arming local militias in Gaza in an effort to counter Hamas in the besieged enclave, officials say, as opposition politicians warn the move risks national security.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the covert operation on Thursday, calling it "a good thing." In a video posted on social media, Netanyahu said Israel had "activated the clans in Gaza that oppose Hamas."

Donald Trump has accused Elon Musk of "going crazy" as the dramatic split between the most powerful person in the US and the richest person in the world escalated into a full-blown feud that could have major political and economic consequences.

In a series of phone calls to US media on Friday morning, Trump hit back sharply at Musk, after the tech mogul and Republican financier launched an extraordinary social media attack on the president the day before, which ended with the accusation that Trump was mentioned in the so-called "Epstein files" - documents related to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Russia is at war with Britain, the US is no longer a reliable ally and the UK must respond by becoming more cohesive and resilient, according to one of the three authors of the strategic defence review.

"We are in pretty big trouble," said Fiona Hill, describing the UK's geopolitical situation as caught between the "rock" of Vladimir Putin's Russia and the "hard place" of Donald Trump's increasingly unpredictable US.

A major Russian drone and missile attack targeted the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Friday, killing at least three people and wounding 21 others, local Ukrainian officials said.

The Russian barrage - the latest in near-daily large-scale attacks from Moscow - included deadly aerial bombs that have become part of Russia's fiercest attacks in the three-year war.
