Not every 'ommm' leads to peace: The dark side of meditation that is

Okay, doesn't meditation help us calm our minds? In theory, yes. In practice? Not always. Although meditation and mindfulness  or "full awareness" have become synonymous with relaxation and peace of mind, recent research shows that these practices are not always harmless. In fact, they have a dark side that is rarely talked about.

A study published in the journal Psychotherapy Research found that over 10% of people who meditate regularly experienced negative side effects that significantly impacted their lives for at least a month. From anxiety and depression, to hallucinations, feelings of disconnection from reality, and frightening thoughts.

Mindfulness is rooted in Buddhist practices and was designed to help us be present in the moment. But today, it has become a multi-billion dollar industry — with coaches, apps, TikTok videos, and “magic” courses selling you 3-step peace of mind. All of this often comes without warning or any in-depth education about the risks.

Author Ronald Purser calls this phenomenon “McMindfulness” — a kind of capitalist spirituality, beautifully packaged to sell. He warns that meditation has been disconnected from its original purpose: freeing oneself from illusions and embracing compassion for others. Instead, it has become a mass-consumption product.

We're not saying to stop meditating. Just be careful how and with whom you practice it. Just as you wouldn't take supplements without doing your research first, don't follow every "coach" who says "meditation changed my life" without knowing the context.

Mindfulness can be very beneficial, but it should be treated with the same care as anything else that affects mental health. Don't idealize it, don't demonize it - just be informed. And remember: true mindfulness begins with accepting all of reality, even the less beautiful.
