When a Chapter Closes: How to Regain Self-Confidence After a Breakup

Closing an important chapter in your life, such as a close and emotional relationship, is not easy. However, remember that you and your ex-partner decided, for a period of time, to be part of each other's lives. There was love, respect, and care between you.

Although everything may have ended, what you're feeling is real. The end of a relationship can shake your self-confidence and mental well-being. So, below you'll find some ways to get through this period more easily and with compassion for yourself.

Feel the pain.

It seems simple, but it's not. Every person who comes into our lives does so for a reason, to teach us something or to help us grow. Romantic relationships reveal parts of ourselves that we didn't know before. Allow yourself to feel pain, to grieve, to be vulnerable. Only through accepting this process can you heal. And don't let a breakup make you think you've failed. Just because the relationship ended doesn't mean you've lost.

Give yourself time.

Some people choose to jump right into a new relationship, but sometimes it's healthier to stop and take care of yourself. Enjoy a warm bath, watch a movie you've missed, read a book, rearrange your room. Take care of yourself like you would someone you truly love. Because even though the relationship is over, you're still here and you're the most important person in your life.

Surround yourself with people who support you.

A group of friends and family can give you the feeling of warmth and security you need. They are there to listen, to hug, and to remind you that you are not alone. Although there is no set time frame for “getting over” a breakup, the love of people who love you can help you rebuild your self-esteem.

Follow your passions.

Was there something you always wanted to try but put off because of your relationship? Now is your time. Get involved in activities that bring you joy, challenge yourself, open new chapters. Don't let an ending relationship stop you from living the life you deserve.

Be kind to yourself.

Don't blame yourself for the breakup. Especially if the reason for it was serious and affected your emotional or physical health. Remember: the end of a relationship doesn't mean you're flawed. Not all relationships last forever, and that's normal. It's also normal to think about the past, reflect, and learn. But never let others make you feel worthless for the choices you've made.
