Veteran actress Valerie Mahaffey has died at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer, her family announced.
Mahaffey left behind a remarkable acting career, becoming one of the most beloved figures for the public with her roles, including Alma Hodge on " Desperate Housewives ", the ex-wife of Kyle McLaughlin's character, as well as Sheldon's teacher, MacElroy, on the series " Young Sheldon ".
She won an Emmy Award in 1992 for her role as Eve on the series “Northern Exposure,” one of her favorite characters. Other notable roles include three episodes of “ Glee ” and a role in the series “ Dead to Me .”
Mahaffey is survived by her husband, actor Joseph Kell, and their daughter, Alice.
"I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most beloved actresses," Kell said in a statement to Variety .
