Taylor Swift made a historic move in the music industry, buying the masters of her albums for around $360 million, a figure that shows how much her creativity is worth.
But what are masters? Masters are the original recordings of songs — the final versions used to produce copies on CDs, streaming , and every other music platform. When an artist owns the masters, they have complete control over their music: when, how, and where it is used. This means tremendous profit and empowerment for the artist.
Taylor began a process of remastering her early albums in 2021, re-releasing them under the name “Taylor's Versions.” This was her way of taking ownership of her creations after a long battle with former manager Scooter Braun and the company that owned the rights to these albums.
Taylor herself has experienced many challenges and emotions along the way. In a recent message, she admitted that after many years of waiting and mixed feelings, she now feels free to proudly say: “All the music I’ve made… is now mine.”
The purchase of the masters is a huge triumph, not only for Taylor, but also for other artists who struggle to maintain control over their creativity in the music industry.
