Legal expert explains why P. Diddy likely won't testify at his trial

Cassie Ventura, Kid Cudi and Dawn Richards are some of the well-known names who have testified in the federal sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs, known as P. Diddy, but don't expect him to speak for himself in court.

Showbiz lawyer and legal expert Lisa Bonner said this is "highly unlikely" to happen.

“Once you testify, everything you've done in life – that is related to these alleged crimes – becomes admissible in court,” she said.

“You’re under oath and you could end up in jail for perjury, so it’s best to avoid giving evidence,” Bonner added. (Perjury under oath is a crime.)

One of the charges that has been mentioned so far during the trial is the attack on rapper Kid Cudi's car with a Molotov cocktail in 2012. The rapper, whose real name is Scott Mescudi, testified last week that he believed Diddy "had something to do with that incident."

The legal expert said that, if P. Diddy does testify, this is one of the things he may have to answer for.

"There's a lot of evidence that's been presented so far that I wouldn't want to explain if I were Diddy," she said.

“For example, 'Did you throw the Molotov cocktail at the car or were you involved in some way?'” she added.

P. Diddy's ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, is one of the key witnesses in the case. His former assistant, Capricorn Clark, also testified in court on Tuesday. The trial is expected to last eight weeks.

The legal expert said she would be “absolutely surprised” if P. Diddy took the floor in court himself. “There’s nothing to gain,” she concluded.

P. Diddy, 55, faces life in prison if convicted on federal charges of sex trafficking, criminal conspiracy and other charges. He has pleaded not guilty so far.
