Freddie Mercury, the legend who captivated world stages with his voice and charisma, left behind a legacy that goes far beyond music. A new biography titled "Love, Freddie" by renowned author Lesley-Ann Jones has just revealed a fact that no one expected: Freddie Mercury had a daughter, who has remained in the shadows for 48 years.
The daughter, identified only as "B," is now a 48-year-old woman, mother, and medical professional living in Europe, away from the public eye. She says she had a close and loving relationship with her father until the end of his life in 1991.
In a handwritten letter, included in the first chapter of the book, she says:
"Freddie Mercury was and is my father. He loved me with all his heart and treated me like the most precious treasure he had."
The discovery was made through a personal letter and 17 diaries written by Freddie Mercury himself, which “B” fanatically preserved for decades and handed over to the author for publication. Only a very close circle knew the truth: Mary Austin – the greatest love of Freddie’s life, his parents and sister. Not even some of the closest people in his team were aware.
According to the book, “B” was born in 1976 as the result of an unexpected relationship between Freddie and the wife of a close friend of his, while her husband was abroad on business. His mother was Catholic and abortion was never an option. So the child was raised by her and her husband, while Freddie Mercury was always a part of her life. He had his own room in the house where she lived and visited her often.
In another letter included in the book, "B" writes:
"The life I have with my husband and family in another country is extremely private. We want our peace and we want to keep it that way. No one needs to know who I am."
Author Jones, who has previously written about John Lennon and the Rolling Stones, admits she was initially skeptical. But after examining the letters, diaries and “B’s” total lack of interest in fame or money, she said:
"This woman is not a fiction. She has asked for nothing, neither publicity nor inheritance. She has lived with dignity and away from the media eye. Even Mercury had made a legal agreement to ensure her well-being, outside the public will."
The letters and memories that have survived portray a very different Freddie from the public figure we know. He was a devoted parent, spoke to his daughter at length every day, and always maintained a close bond with her.
“He wasn't the man the public thought he was,” Jones says.
This story sheds a whole new light on the life of Freddie Mercury. Behind the extravagant performances and the voice that defied all standards, there was a man who lived a secret, deep and pure love — a parental love that no one knew about.
If this isn't the most surprising story of the moment, we don't know what is. After all, even legends have secrets – and sometimes they're more powerful than any song they've ever sung.
