Whether you have a bad habit of biting your nails or they've become weakened by using the wrong products, short, brittle nails can be a source of concern. Not only can they be painful, but they also don't offer much room for creative nail art experimentation.
Before you book your next nail appointment, first try these helpful tips from dermatologist Elizabeth Tanzi to improve the health of your nails:
1. Avoid strong disinfectants and aggressive soaps
“The best way to care for your hands and nails is to not dry them out,” says Dr. Tanzi. Choose a gentle, creamy soap with moisturizing ingredients that cleanses but doesn’t dry them out.
2. Invest in a super moisturizing hand cream
After each hand washing, use a nourishing cream to prevent drying and cracking of the skin. A greasy layer on your nails can also discourage you from biting, especially during periods of stress. The “taste” of the product will make you stop biting your nails.
3. Don't neglect the cuticles
"If you want to grow your nails, you need to take care of the skin around them," says dermatologist. Use a special cuticle oil or cream and apply it every night before bed.
4. Apply a strengthening base
A base coat rich in nutrients helps strengthen and grow nails. If you don't get enough nutrients from your diet, cosmetic products can provide the necessary help.
5. Use a “bitter” protective layer
If nail biting is a habit that's hard to break, a bitter-tasting product may be the solution. This will constantly remind you not to touch your nails and also protect the skin around them from damage.
6. Always keep your nails filed.
It may seem routine, but regular filing helps keep nails clean, neat, and free of rough cuticles, thus reducing the urge to tease them with your teeth or fingers.
7. Take nutritional supplements (with caution)
“Studies have shown that biotin can improve nail growth and strength,” says Dr. Tanzi.
If you don't want supplements, a diet rich in vitamins and minerals like zinc, iron, and B vitamins can make a noticeable difference.
