Cheap sex toys from Temu are a big "NO!" for experts - Here's why

If you've ever searched for sex toys online and been tempted by the incredibly cheap prices offered by the Temu platform, maybe it's time to stop and think twice.

According to sexual health experts, many of these products are not safe to use and can pose serious risks to intimate health.

What is Temu and why is it a problem?

Temu is a very popular online site for incredibly low prices, selling everything from children's clothing and toys, to cosmetics and sex toys. The main problem with this platform is that it does not provide clear information about the composition and quality of the products it sells - especially for sex toys.

The danger of cheap sex toys

According to Dr. Holly Richmond, a sex therapist and expert in intimate product safety, many of the toys sold on Temu contain unsafe materials. They are often simply described as “silicone” or “ABS plastic,” without clarifying what type of silicone is used.

Why does it matter?

High-quality silicone, such as what’s called “medical grade” or “food grade,” is nonporous — meaning it doesn’t absorb bacteria. But when silicone is loose and mixed with other substances, it becomes porous and, if used in intimate areas of the body, can cause infections, irritation, or even physical damage over long periods of time.

“If you don't know what material you're putting into your body, then you're playing with risk,” says Richmond.

How do you know if a toy is safe?

When buying sex toys, look for products that clearly mention these materials:

- Medical-grade silicone
- Borosilicate glass (Pyrex)
- Stainless steel
- ABS plastic (for external parts only, not for insertion into the body)

- Avoid toys made of soft rubber, silicone without a description, or that have no information about the material at all.

How to find quality toys without spending a lot?

Yes, quality sex toys are often expensive – but you don’t have to pay 100 euros. Many serious brands offer discounts, especially during holidays or special months (like the “masturbation month” promoted in Western countries).

Why is it better to invest in a good product?

A cheap toy may seem like a solution for the moment, but if it leads to a vaginal infection, skin irritation, or the need for medical treatment – ??it’s not worth it at all. Not just for physical health, but also for emotional and sexual well-being.

Don't skimp on your health.

Sex toys are tools for pleasure, but also for well-being and personal exploration. Take the time to be informed and choose carefully – because your body deserves safety, not danger hidden behind a “good deal.”
