Diane von Furstenberg's husband, Barry Diller, has come out as gay. The businessman and the designer were together for more than 50 years, 24 of which were married.
"We are not just friends. Simply put, it was an explosion of passion that lasted for years. Yes, I like men, but that does not conflict with my love for Diana."
I can't explain it to myself or the world. It happened to both of us, without motivation or effort.
"In a universal way, we were meant for each other," Diller writes in an excerpt from his autobiographical article.
Regarding sexuality, he wrote that "identities are much more fluid and natural, without these strictly defined boundaries of the last century."
When he met Diana in 1974, he had only had experience with men, so the designer was the first woman in his life.
"I never questioned my sexuality (I was just afraid of other people's reactions). But in my romance with Diana I never doubted that heterosexual biological impulses were as strong as homosexual ones."
Their relationship ended in 1981, but continued from 1991 onwards, causing confusion.
"A relationship that began with indifference then exploded into a romance as natural to us as breathing, surprising both us and everyone else. It is truly the miracle of my life," he concluded.
