Airyn, the 29-year-old daughter of famous actor Robert De Niro and actress Toukie Smith, announced that she is transgender the day before, April 30. In an interview with “Them” magazine, she spoke about her personal journey and the challenges she has experienced in finding her identity.
She said that she feels like she has been present, but others have not recognized her. Airyn also criticized the media for reporting incorrectly about her and stressed that people do not really know her life. For those who call her a “nepotism child” because of her father’s fame, she said that she did not grow up with such privileges and that she wants to achieve success on her own.
In November, Airyn began hormone therapy and hopes to be an inspiration to people like her – people of color, queer, transgender, etc., who don't fit traditional beauty standards.
After the interview was published, the actor's daughter thanked people for their support with an Instagram post:
"Thank you all for being so kind and supportive! I'm not used to being the center of attention," she wrote, among other things.
