Officially divorced! Monika Kryemadhi and Ilir Meta legally separate

Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi have officially ended their several-year marriage. The Tirana Civil Court ruled today, April 11, 2025, on their divorce.

Ilir Meta was present at the hearing, accompanied by police forces, as we recall that since October of last year, the former president has been in prison. On the other hand, Monika did not appear physically, but was represented by her lawyer, Redi Llanaj.

Ilir Meta, the leader of the Freedom Party and former president of Albania, confirmed on June 20 that he and Monika Kryemadhi have initiated divorce proceedings. In a public statement, Ilir Meta referred to Monika as his “ex-wife” and added that the matter is being pursued through legal channels.

"Ms. Monika Kryemadhi is now my ex-wife and today I have also followed the legal path for this matter. I have also notified my son, Besar Ilir Meta," the former president said.

In April of this year, in an interview for "Opinion", Monika admitted that she and Ilir had a frozen relationship.

"My marital relationship with Meta is currently frozen due to the conflict in the party, and of course within our family. I think it is not the first time that Ilir Meta and I have had these conflicts. We do not have these principled, moral conflicts between each other. Our conflicts are only political conflicts," she said, adding: "The greatest foolishness in both men and women lies in thinking that they can build their happiness and their power by destroying the happiness and family of someone else, but this does not happen. Why does it not happen? It does not happen because the moral relationship is much more important than the financial relationship."

Further, Monika herself reacted, saying:

"My communication with Ilir Meta has been zero for 7 months, except for the day when the divorce issue came home. I have no communication with him. Of course, we will work separately on this issue. I can say that the arrest measure for Ilir Meta is an arrest measure that attempts to further develop our family conflict."

She added:

"They want to put the things they suspect about me on Ilir Meta. I will not meet him in prison. Even if I wanted to, he would not accept it. There is no greater arrest than spiritual arrest. I do not wish my family conflict on anyone. It is not a conflict between two people who met by chance, or for interest. They were two people who loved each other very much. We walked hand in hand for 33 years and my desire to fight the Tirana incinerator led to paying a very big bill: the destruction of my family."
