Because depression is mistakenly considered common, many people neglect to seek treatment, which is harmful because when left unchecked, mood disorders can be dangerous. People can live normal lives even if they suffer from depression if they get the help they need, but it can be difficult for many people to admit that they have a mental health problem.
Depression manifests itself in many different ways, and while you may be familiar with some of its symptoms, there are some common psychological signs you may not be aware of. According to Dr. Rafael Euba, a mental health consultant at the London Psychiatric Centre, you should look out for the following signs.
Loss of interest
The inability to enjoy things that once gave you pleasure, combined with a loss of interest in your usual social activities, like spending time with your friends, is one of the most obvious signs that you're withdrawing into yourself. While you were theoretically excited about a hobby or new idea, you end up doing nothing and eventually become indifferent.
Fatigue and insomnia
Whether you realize it or not, the weight of thoughts and worries in your mind can lead to sleep problems and insomnia because you're not getting enough rest. All you want to do is sleep and get away from your responsibilities and the world for a while, but at the same time you can't relax and calm down because of all the thoughts in your head.
Unexpected reactions
While on one hand you experience indifference to almost everything, you may find that your reaction to negative news or anything else is very strong and can lead to outbursts of anger that you didn't even think you could handle. You feel like everything makes you angry and you can't control it anymore.
Pessimism
Although feelings of hopelessness, irritability, and sadness are part of human nature and we can all feel them from time to time, the key to recognizing them as a symptom of a deeper problem is to recognize when they persist much longer and much more intensely than usual.
