Maria Shriver has written an autobiographical book, a preview of which was obtained by People magazine. In it, among other things, she describes the day she learned about Arnold Schwarzenegger's extramarital affair with their maid, Mildred Baena, from which a child was born, as well as the end of Shriver and the actor's marriage. It sounds like a story that seems to be taken from a soap opera, but it is a real experience.
As she writes in her autobiographical book, "I Am Maria," she considers this event to be quite difficult, as she talks about the day she discovered the betrayal in a hotel room.
"Facing a difficult moment in my life, I said to myself: 'Maria, this can't be the end for you,'" she writes.
She says she felt devastated by confusion, anger, fear, sadness, and anxiety.
"It broke my heart, my soul, it destroyed what was left of me."
The journalist gave birth to four children with the actor and politician. Her 25-year marriage officially ended in 2011.
The actor himself has previously spoken about the divorce, saying:
"I caused a lot of pain to my family because you destroyed everything. Everyone suffered: Mary, the children, Joseph, his mother."
Shriver, in her autobiographical book, chose not to describe the experience in detail, but emphasized the importance of the lesson she learned.
"I was wrong to think that anyone other than myself could guarantee my security, worth, and peace of mind. I also had to face my other illusions—loneliness. In the past, I believed that if you don't have a partner, you have no value and can't be loved."
