Lady Gaga opened up about some of her recent personal challenges, particularly around her mental health. Gaga revealed that she had gone through psychosis five years ago.
The state of psychosis occurs when a series of symptoms affect the mind and cause a person to have difficulty separating what is real from what is not.
Gaga said:
"I wasn't in deep touch with reality for a while. I got very far away from life, but I managed to come back to myself."
She cited "playing characters earlier in her career" as the reason she became disillusioned with reality .
The reasons that can lead to a person's psychotic state vary, such as: mental health disorders, substance abuse, major trauma and stress, extreme cases of insomnia, as well as genetic factors.
Although it's a difficult topic for Gaga to talk about, she also understands the significance of her breakup, emphasizing something important:
"It's something I've found increasingly difficult to talk about. I hate feeling defined by it. It felt like something I was ashamed of. But I don't think we should feel ashamed if we go through things like that."
Psychosis is primarily treated with antipsychotic medications to control symptoms and psychological therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Social support and treatment of underlying conditions are also important for recovery from this condition.
