If you've noticed stains on your underwear, here's what you need to

The Internet has taught us to seek answers to any doubt or curiosity we have, even the smallest issues. One of the topics that has gone viral recently concerns a common phenomenon that most women don't know what it means: why do underwear sometimes look like they have bleach stains?

Where do these stains come from?

According to doctors, there's nothing to worry about! In fact, these spots are a good sign of vaginal health. The vagina has a natural level of acidity, with a pH that usually ranges from 3.8 to 4.5. This acidity helps protect against bacteria and infections, but it can also affect the color of clothes.

According to Dr. Vanessa MacKay, a representative of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the acidity of the vagina can partially discolour the material of your underwear, and this is completely normal. So if you thought these stains were due to poor hygiene, you're wrong! In fact, this is a sign that your vagina is working properly.

Why is the vagina acidic?

The acidity of the vagina is a natural defense mechanism. It is home to good bacteria, such as Lactobacillus, which produce lactic acid and help maintain a healthy environment. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the natural pH of the vagina is between 3.8 and 5.0, while clean water has a neutral pH of 7. This means that the vagina is much more acidic and can react with dyes on clothing, causing those stains that many women notice.

Self-cleaning and the importance of vaginal secretions

Another important fact is that the vagina has self-cleaning abilities. Its secretions, which are usually white or transparent, are completely normal and help maintain its balance.

According to Dr. MacKay, over-interfering with this natural process, like using harsh soaps or frequent intimate washing, can upset the balance and cause infections. So instead of worrying about stains on your underwear, make sure you're treating your vagina with the right care!
