Selena Gomez has apologized to her "people" after the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency arrested nearly 1,000 Mexican immigrants within a day of Donald Trump's return to office.
The pop star posted a video on Instagram, reflecting on the recent arrests and appearing in tears. Gomez said she was "so sorry" about the news and said her people were "being attacked."
She continued by saying "I don't understand. I'm so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can't. I don't know what to do."
Despite her despair, the Mexican-American singer promised to try "everything" to protect her community.
Selena later deleted the video of her emotional reaction, revealing that she received ambiguous hate from her.
"Apparently it's not okay to show empathy for people," she wrote in another story.
Selena's reaction comes after ICE (the US agency that enforces federal laws governing border control, customs, trade and immigration) confirmed that officers arrested 956 people on Sunday in Chicago, Miami and Newark.
Trump has signed several executive orders related to immigration since taking office last week, fulfilling his campaign promise to crack down on undocumented individuals, thus executing mass deportations.
