"Tinsel" hair: The trend that is "blinding" TikTok can be

TikTok doesn't miss a single beauty trend, and tinsel hair - or as it's called "fairy hair" - is proof of that. To date, videos depicting this trend have garnered over 85 billion views on TikTok.

Stars have not hesitated to experiment with this sparkling accessory. Katy Perry used bright, bright colors in an Instagram post to promote her stay in Las Vegas on Nov. 29. Meanwhile, Kacey Musgraves rocked a high ponytail full of tinsel during a performance in New Orleans in October 2019. But if you think that's new, remember Beyoncé's tinsel-adorned hair at the 2010 Grammys. Although these moments are from years ago, it is clear: tinsel hair continues to receive more and more attention.

Kelsea Jensen, hairstylist and founder of Goddess Glitter, describes the trend as "sparkly threads tied to the hair." They come in a wide range of bright colors.

But what makes these yarns so sought after now? San Diego hairstylist Meg West attributes this comeback to nostalgia for the '90s and early 2000s. According to her, tinsel hair is a "super fun" way to add vibrancy to hair color without using chemicals.

Fixing tinsel on the hair can be done both in the salon and at home - it's up to you how you want to do it. Ashley Armour, a New Orleans hairstylist, uses two methods for applying tinsel.

"The first method is when you tie a single strand of tinsel to a single strand of hair. The other is with a micro-circle, where 20 strands of tinsel come together in a single circle,” she explains to Allure. “Both methods are very easy to maintain. I usually tell clients that, especially individual strands, they will fall out with the natural hair - some may fall out within the first week, while others may last up to six months or more."

If you want an easy, fun, low-commitment makeover, tinsel hair might be just what you're looking for this holiday season. Who doesn't want a little sparkle in their life (and hair)?
