Luigi Mangione's attorney, Karen Friedman-Agnifilo, has a surprising connection to Sean "Diddy" Combs' legal case.
The former prosecutor is married to Marc Agnifilo, who was the rapper's attorney in connection with his sex trafficking allegations.
However, this is not the first time that the husband-wife duo have been simultaneously involved in well-known legal cases.
Karen, who is employed by murder suspect Brian Thompson, left her longtime position as head of the sex crimes unit at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office in 2021.
With a career spanning nearly three decades, she spent most of her time as a public servant, and from 2014 to 2021, she served as second-in-command under DA Cyrus Vance.
After her exit from public service, Karen joined her husband's private firm, Agnifilo Intrater LLP, where she is currently a partner. She has also made several appearances in the media as a commentator. Her television work includes legal analyst for CNN, legal advisor for Law & Order, and a weekly legal podcast.
Since she's considered a seasoned professional in her field, other attorneys don't think it's a surprise that she's representing Mangione. "She knows every hallway, every judge, every clerk in the court," a New York prosecutor told CNN.
Similarly, her husband, Marc, has also been a lawyer for over 30 years. Before taking on Diddy's case, he defended high-profile clients such as Martin Shkreli ("Pharma Bro"), Keith Raniere (the leader of the NXIVM cult) and Roger Ng (the Malaysia scandal).
After Diddy's arrest, Marc said the rapper is "not a criminal." “We are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unfair prosecution of Mr. Combs by the US Attorney's Office,” he said on Sept. 16, adding, “He [Combs] is a person imperfect, but not a criminal.” "These are the actions of an innocent man who has nothing to hide and he looks forward to clearing his name in court," Marc further told TMZ.
