Shawn Mendes considers Camila Cabello to be one of his "closest friends". The "Stitches" hitmaker was in a relationship with the former Fifth Harmony member for two years, until November 2021.

In an interview with the New York Times, he expressed disappointment at speculation that the two are "against each other in a weird way," saying that she remains someone he can trust.

Describing her as "one of his closest friends", he said: "I get emotional just talking about it, what people are going to say. But to be honest, if anything happened to my family or me, she would probably be the first person I would call even today."

"Our relationship is teaching me what love means, in a bigger way."

In 2022, Mendes abruptly canceled a two-year international tour of more than 80 concerts due to mental health issues.

The 26-year-old began to consume cigarettes and alcohol before performances, although he had always tried to avoid them to protect his voice, and after each performance, a drink was like a "need to escape". He decided to end the tour before it went down the wrong path.

He said:

"I thought: I'm not going to repeat the same story that's been written thousands of times by other musicians and artists, where they can't handle the situation and start taking more drugs, more alcohol, until it's too late. I won't do that. I'm going in the other direction."
