How to choose the right hair color based on your skin and hair type

If you're thinking about a new hair color, or just want to change the tone you have, it's easier to do than you might think. We give you some tips on choosing the right color and how you can achieve the best results at home for both the color and the maintenance of your hair, without spending a lot of money (or half of your weekend at the hair salon).

How to choose the color that suits you best

Choosing a hair color that is right for you is not as difficult as it seems. Even if you want to dye your hair at home, you can have a free consultation with a hair stylist. There are also hundreds of online apps that can help you find the right color and point you in the right direction.

If you like to make a drastic change, choose a hair color that contrasts with your natural hair tones. For example, cool platinum color on warm toned skin creates a wonderful look. Or for a more natural look, choose a shade within a few levels of your natural hair color.

Consider the maintenance you need to do to your hair

Before dyeing your hair, consider how long you are able to maintain the new color. For example, a transformation from brunette to blonde is great, but your roots will need constant attention.

Luckily, you can fix your roots at home with ease and without having to redo your entire color in just 20 minutes. It's a simple process. Simply mix the contents of the tube and bottle in a bowl and blend together with the specific brush. Apply the hair color to your roots, taking care not to miss any spots. Set your timer for 20 minutes and then rinse, condition and admire your roots.

Identify your skin tone

If you have decided to use a full color, knowing your skin tone will help you choose the right tone. Warm skin tones (yellow, gold) work best with rich, warm undertones such as golden blonde, honey, caramel, copper or chocolate brown. Avoid gray tones.

Cool skin tones (pink, red, or blue) go well with cool undertones like platinum, blonde, cool brown, or black to complement your complexion. Avoid warm, golden colors as they can clash.

Neutral skin tones (a mix of cool and warm undertones) can pull off a wide variety of colors, from warm to cooler undertones.

Consider your hair type and density

Be aware of your hair type and be realistic about the results you can expect. For example, if you have very dark hair, expecting to instantly turn platinum blonde from an at-home hair dye is almost futile, as it most likely won't happen. Also, the thickness of your hair will affect the amount of product you need.

If you have thin hair, lighter shades like blonde or light brown can create the illusion of volume, while darker colors emphasize thinness.

Curly or textured hair works well in shades that enhance your curls, such as warm caramel, chestnut, or deep brown for a natural glow. Avoid bleach because it can damage textured hair.

Anyway, do whatever you want to do as long as you feel like it's the best version of yourself. The important thing is to have fun in the process!
