Former president Ilir Meta has been arrested and will remain in detention cells of 313 in Tirana, after the Special Court upheld the measure of prison arrest. Meta, who faces serious charges of corruption, money laundering and concealment of wealth, was present at the court session that lasted a full 5 hours, accompanied by tensions and strong debates.
During the hearing, Meta made an open threat to the main witness of the case, an action that caused strong reactions in the courtroom.
On the other hand, his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, who is under the same charges, will appear once a month in SPAK. She defended Meta, calling the process unfair and politically motivated. In a statement, she said that Meta is in prison for the charges against Monika Kryemadhi:
"My position and my argument was that for everything Ilir Meta is accused of, there is no connection whatsoever. It seems they had nothing on CEZ-DIA and lumped it in with my charges. It was funny when the prosecutor said that Monika Kryemadhi removed her uterus in collaboration with Ilir Meta. What does Ilir Meta have to do with it?", she said.
"I explained to the prosecution and the judge about all the things Monika is accused of. The problem is not that Ilir Meta is dangerous, that they want to make him dangerous. I would like to be obliged to attend conferences for journalists once a week", Monika said.
The case involves the investigation of two major dossiers, CEZ-DIA and US lobbying. The investigation also focuses on the former couple's undeclared expenses, including the purchase of real estate, medical services and credit card transactions, which add to the charges against them.
