This may be the reason why we believe in horoscopes

Have you ever wondered why the horoscope you read every day seems so accurate? How is it possible that the prediction for your sign always matches your life? Well, there may be a psychological reason behind this and that reason is called the Barnum effect.

What is the Barnum effect?

The Barnum effect is a psychological phenomenon that occurs when people tend to believe very general descriptions as valid and specific to them. It's that moment when you read the horoscope and think: "This is me! How do they know so well?” Indeed, the description is so general and vague that it could fit anyone, but your brain personalizes it and finds connections where there are no specifics.

This effect called "Barnum" refers to PT Barnum, an American showman who exploited people's ability to believe in general descriptions to appeal to the masses. Thus, horoscopes or personality tests work on this principle: Using phrases that can be true for most people.

Why can you fall prey to this effect?

In part, this comes from human nature to seek meaning and acceptance. People need to feel special, and when faced with a generic description, their brains do the work to find personal connections. Basically, we want to believe that the horoscope is speaking for us!

Furthermore, horoscopes are usually worded positively and encouragingly. This makes you feel good and create an emotional connection to the predictions. When you read a horoscope that says: "Today will be a good day to start new projects", you naturally feel motivated and think that something positive is happening!

Is it harmful?

The Barnum effect is not necessarily harmful. Even if the horoscope is not based on scientific evidence, if it helps you reflect on your life or think positively about the future, there is nothing wrong with it. In fact, many people use the horoscope as a source of inspiration or reflection.

However, it is important to be aware of this effect and not to take every horoscope phrase as an inalienable prediction. By knowing how the brain works and what influences our perceptions, we can be more aware of how predictions and general descriptions affect us.
