Gen Z is struggling with flirting and hookups, but why?

Are you ready to discover the real reason why Gen Z's attempts to meet the perfect person aren't working?

For Generation Z, typically born between 1997 and 2012, breaking into the dating world has become a challenge in itself. They have been so present online that when it comes to talking to people, the situation becomes a little scary.

The reliance on digital communication has created a fear of face-to-face interactions, making traditional flirting an almost lost art.

Love-hate relationship with dating apps

Some young Gen Zs prefer meeting people in person rather than using dating apps. However, many agree that if someone thinks you're cute, that person simply searches for your Instagram and then sends a signal that they're interested in getting to know you. (Chuna, a like on the story is not enough, be more direct!) This shift from personal interactions to online communication makes it difficult to get to know potential partners in real life.

On the other hand, dating apps offer the convenience and anonymity of online interaction, where you can talk and flirt with someone without the pressure of a face-to-face meeting. But this convenience can create an addiction to apps, replacing the social skills needed to create deep, genuine connections.

The impact of the pandemic

The pandemic has exacerbated these challenges. Some young people started school in isolation, missing out on essential socialization experiences that help develop flirting skills. Outcome? A generation that expresses itself more openly behind screens than face to face.

Also, the pandemic has created an increased sense of loneliness and social isolation, making young people more dependent on technology to stay connected. Virtual meetings and online chats have become the norm, creating an emotional distance when trying to make real connections in the real world.

Social anxiety and superficial relationships

Dating apps have pushed people towards superficial relationships that give them a boost of confidence. This reliance on internet dating creates a disconnect when trying to connect in the real world. Fear of rejection also appears to be a major challenge for Generation Z.

The importance of personal interactions and the development of social skills should not be underestimated. Generation Z must find a balance between the digital and real worlds to create lasting relationships.
