6 Things You Shouldn't Do During Turbulence on a Plane

There is perhaps nothing more disconcerting than flying through the air while the plane you are traveling in is hit by turbulence. Fear, panic, uncertainty have many consequences that come along with this phenomenon that is often common during air travel.

Turbulence occurs when a bunch of air currents spin in different directions for a variety of reasons, such as temperature changes or storms. But what should you do to avoid more serious physical or mental consequences? Here are the six most important of them:

#1 Never stand up

You may want to get up and move when the turbulence gets stronger, but resist this instinctive reaction, experts say. Standing is the most dangerous thing you can do during turbulence because you are more likely to fall to the ground or be hit by hard objects on the plane.

#2 Don't take off your seat belt

This should go without saying, as there is a reason why the flight staff tell you to wear your seat belt, even if the indicator is off. Most injuries that occur during turbulence occur when passengers are not wearing seat belts.

#3 Don't leave the toilet

If you happen to be on the toilet when turbulence hits, experts say stay put. The idea of ??being stuck in a toilet may sound like panic, but being seated when the plane is hit by turbulence minimizes the serious consequences of this phenomenon.

#4 Never open the hatches above your head

Turbulence is unlikely to lead to an emergency landing, so there's no need to panic and look for things above your head. So just sit back. Opening those bins can cause bags or other objects to fall on your head or that of other passengers.

#5 Do not leave the table open in front of your feet

As annoying as it may seem, there is a reason why flight attendants ask you to close the table, especially when there is turbulence because you can be hit hard in the stomach, face, etc.

#6 Try not to panic

Most importantly, try to stay calm. If you're imagining terrifying scenarios in your head, remind yourself that air travel is extremely safe. Don't think scary things, just take a deep breath and relax.
