On TikTok, a video of a therapist from California, who goes by the name of Kati Morton, has received more than 6 million views as she lists the signs that identify "big sister syndrome".

First, what is "big sister syndrome"?

It should be emphasized that it is not a psychologically confirmed syndrome and coincides with an often unconscious family role that many young women inherit as the "eldest child", in which they find themselves doing more housework, taking care emotionally and physically for younger siblings, as well as encountering more demands and responsibilities from parents.

Symptoms:

Intense sense of family responsibility
Tendency to think only of others
Some resentment towards younger siblings but also towards parents

But what do studies say about birth order?

The stereotypes are familiar to everyone: the first children are stubborn and go too far, the middle ones are more social and rebellious, the little ones are restless and manipulative.

Studies have found a link between an individual's role in the family pecking order and how the individual responds, including intelligence level and education. But most studies are more focused on firstborns, as they have been shown to be more responsible and mature than siblings.

While in deeper analysis, this connection between birth order and personality is not so strong. A 2015 study of more than 20,000 people in Germany, the UK and the US found no relationship between relationship order and personality traits, although it did reveal that firstborns have a slight advantage in intelligence. .

Other studies have been done in the same period, but not only that and the results have been ambiguous, so there is a big online debate on this very topic.

Until this moment, this topic remains on the list of ideas not fully studied and discussions will continue online, as there are many people who oppose it, even more so who come out on its side.
