Have you ever had one of those days when you wake up starving, fantasizing about jars of chocolate cream, good cheese, etc. It's those typical days when you head to the fridge and think about nothing but food.

But is it normal to feel super hungry especially during the days of your menstrual cycle? If so, is there a reason why this condition occurs? According to Dr. Shahzadi Harper, founder of the Harper Clinic, and Valerie Agyeman, a women's health nutritionist, the answer is 'Yes!'

Why is the feeling of hunger emphasized when you are menstruating?

"It's very common to feel hungry during your cycle, even a few days before," says Dr Harper. The hormone progesterone is more dominant during this part of the cycle, while estrogen levels are declining. This is also why you may feel sleepier and more prone to mood swings.

Both of these hormones can affect the levels of ghrelin and leptin, which are two hormones that regulate hunger and satiety. Estrogen and progesterone can change the balance of these hormones and therefore change hunger and appetite.

How can you regulate hunger during our periods?

Increased appetite is a temporary condition, so don't worry! Make sure you eat balanced meals that help stabilize your blood sugar so you feel fuller for longer. Try a delicious spinach salad with chickpeas and avocado or lentils. Also, drink a lot of water, because it helps to hydrate the body during these days.

Listen to your body, but don't forget to manage your desires very smartly!
