In anticipation of the Oscars, the 96th edition, which will be held this Sunday (March 10, 2024), we are reminding you of the 10 most commented and sensational events that have been billed to the most important cinematographic event in the world.

Let's start with the slap Will Smith gave Chris Rock in the middle of the show, when the host made a joke about the shaved head of the actor's wife Jada Pinkett.

In 2022, there was no event as commented on as this one. Smith was sentenced to not participate in the next 10 years at the Academy Awards.

In 2017, the award for "Best Film" was given by mistake. "La La Land" was said to have won, while the real winner was "Moonlight". After all the chaos, the confusion was cleared up and the director of the famous musical went on stage to present the award to his colleague.

In 1973, actress Marlon Brando won the award as "Best Actress" for her role as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather". But she refused to participate in the show and sent actress and activist Sacheen Littlefeather in her place.

The latter read a letter brought by Brando explaining that her absence was a sign of protest about the way Hollywood treats Native American actors. She was insulted by cheers from the guests who did not want to hear her. 50 years after the incident, Oscar apologized to Sacheen for the incident, shortly before she passed away.

In 2003, when Adrien Brody received the award as "Best Actor" for his role in "The Pianist", he kissed host Halle Berry without warning in the middle of the stage. The passionate kiss, as the actress herself has shown, was not only unplanned, but embarrassed her. "I didn't know what was happening, I just followed the situation", she explained later.

John Travolta misrepresented the popular performer on stage in 2014. The moment went viral when he said: "I present to you the talented, Adele Dazeem." The name she really should have said was Idina Menzel, who was going to sing "Let it Go" from Frozen. The artist herself considers that moment as very fun and as the best thing that happened to her.

In 2015, when the nominees for the Oscars were announced, it was noticeable that there was a lack of black actors in the important categories. That same year, the hashtag #oscarssowhite became famous, so much so that April Reign went viral with a post about the situation where she wrote: "Oscars is so white that he asked to touch my hair."

In 2011 Anne Hathaway and James Franco both presented the important show and were criticized a lot for the not-so-good job they did. In a later interview, Anne said that she never saw the recording of that presentation because it was criticized so much, but she herself said that it was fun and at the time it was happening she thought she did a good job.

In 1974 David Niven was on stage to introduce Elizabeth Taylor when a naked man walked on stage during the live broadcast. The audience burst into laughter, along with the presenter, who made fun of this moment.

In 1989, Rob Lowe performed an outrageous song and dance number with actress Elieen Bowman, who was dressed as Snow White. When he spoke about this moment in 2018, he said that the Academy asked him to do this performance and he was too young to say no.
