Do sugary foods cause diabetes? What you need to know

There are many conjectures related to diabetes and one of them is the excessive consumption of sugar. Diabetes is a complex disease caused by a combination of factors, doctors say. Eating too much sugar is not enough to cause diabetes, it is much more complicated than that.

The American Diabetes Association points out that there is a link between the consumption of drinks with added sugar and type 2 diabetes, but eating sugar does not cause diabetes. Other influencing factors are: environment, genetics, age, physical activity and stress.

A diet high in added sugars and saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes. High-sugar diets are also associated with an increased risk of overweight and obesity, fatty liver disease, and more.

Type 2 diabetes can be affected by the amount of sugar in your diet, which affects the amount of sugar in your blood. So the increase in sugar can be related to the risk of diabetes of this type. But eating sugar alone is not enough to cause diabetes.

What are the symptoms of excessive sugar consumption?

Doctors say that people feel more hyperactive after a large amount of sugar. But none of these effects have been scientifically proven. Other symptoms of high blood sugar are increased thirst, frequent urination, increased appetite and unexplained weight loss.

How can you get rid of sugar from your body?

If you know your blood sugar is high, there are steps you can take to lower it, such as drinking plenty of water, taking a 10-minute walk, and taking medication as directed by your doctor.
