Being in a toxic professional environment can be difficult. It could be the problematic manager whose employees secretly make disparaging comments and many other situations. Facing a toxic environment means taking the initiative to leave.
According to experts, being in a toxic work environment can have long-term effects on mental health.
Some valuable tips from the experts:
Document everything
This is one of the most important parts of dealing with a toxic work environment. All your negative experiences should be documented, especially when it comes to racism and other forms of prejudice. Email is a great way to keep some situations documented.
Set boundaries
Setting boundaries can be done in many ways. Try to limit interactions with the person who touches you. "When someone has the power to define your life, that's a power dynamic. The person knows they have something over you and can abuse that power. Trauma reactions can be depression, overeating or alcohol," says Khadyajah Jenkins, a talent scout.
Create an exit plan
It is important to keep in mind that leaving may be the best option. But you don't have to leave work if you don't have to. “You cannot create safety in a place that is toxic or harmful to you. You can have boundaries and meditation practices, but if it's not a safe space, nothing changes," Jenkins concludes.
