Five Iranian girls were arrested for a dancing video. Soon after, Iranian women and celebrities, such as Selena Gomez, came to their defense.
The five teenagers posted the video on TikTok on March 8 of themselves dancing to Rema and Selena Gomez's song, "Calm Down."
The teenagers were reportedly arrested by Iranian police on March 10. In Iran, women are not allowed to dance in public or be seen without their hair covered by a hijab. After the arrest, the girls are believed to have been forced to apologize for the dance video.
Selena Gomez posted an item on Instagram saying, “[Love to] these young women and all the women of Iran who continue to be brave in demanding fundamental change. Please know that your strength is inspiring.”
In Iran, women have started posting videos in support of teenagers dancing to the same song. The videos were posted blurring the women's portraits in order to preserve anonymity to avoid arrest by Iranian authorities.
