More than 130 people, including activist and writer Gloria Steinem and prominent women's rights organizations, have published an open letter in support of actress Amber Heard, who lost her defamation lawsuit against Johnny Depp, her ex-husband. her, in June of this year.
In the letter, which was first published by NBC News, feminist groups expressed support for Heard and condemned the harassment the actress has faced since the trial. Groups dealing with sexual assault and domestic violence awareness also signed the letter.
"The majority of these attacks were fueled by misinformation, misogyny, biphobia and a monetized social media environment where a woman's allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault were used for ridicule and entertainment," the letter said.
After a 7-week trial, the court ruled that Amber Heard should pay Johnny Depp $15 million in damages, a figure that was later reduced to $10.35 million. The defamation suit was filed by Depp in connection with an article in the Washington Post in which Heard wrote that she was a "public figure who represented domestic abuse." Heard did not mention Depp by name, but the actor's lawyers said the article referred to allegations made after their divorce.
