How much would you pay for a pair of used slippers? Ok, let's change the question: How much would you pay for a pair of used Steve Jobs slippers? While you're thinking, someone else already has theirs. For how much money?
A person shelled out more than $200,000 for a pair of vintage Birkenstock slippers owned and worn by the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs - setting a record for the highest price ever paid for a pair of slippers at auction.
The brown suede Arizona slippers, which were expected to sell for $60,000, sold for $218,750 when they went up for auction at Julien's Auctions. Before the sale, the auction house said the slippers were a wardrobe staple for Jobs in the 1970s and '80s. He passed away in 2011 from pancreatic cancer.
The Birkenstocks were found in the trash by Mark Sheff, a former house manager of Steve Jobs.
"Steve Jobs changed the world not only with his revolutionary innovations, but also with his business leadership style and the fashion of wearing slippers," said Darren Julien, CEO and founder of Julien's Auctions, in a statement to CNN. "These Birkenstocks were worn by Jobs as he made history creating the Apple computer and were a staple of the technology icon."
